This interesting model is a replica of the barges ferrying from the Douro River area of Portugal. Navigating the river was dangerous due to rapids and strong and treacherous currents in some places. The design of the boats was based on the hulls of Viking ships. They carried a variety of goods produced by the local region, such as wine, raw brandy, olives and olive oil, pickled sardines, salted cod, cured and smoked ham, corn and corn bread, grapes... just about anything that was needed.
The model was made by the Portuguese company Ocidental in 1993. It is nicely detailed, including the loads of barrels that would transport the goods.
