The ship was built in 1851 and was assigned as the flagship of the US Navy's East India Squadron. Here she performed various duties including diplomatic trips to Japan, combat duties in the South China Sea. In 1856-61, she participated in Mediterranean Sea duties. In 1861-65, during the American Civil War, she participated in the Confederate blockade of the East Coast. During that time, she captured several Southern ships carrying contraband of war. After the Civil War, she participated in other actions, such as off the coast of Mexico and Brazil. Her career ended on 27 September 1883, when she was sold for scrapping in New York.
The model is superbly crafted with IMAI precision. It is now still offered by Aoshima. Still, it is one of the collector's rarities, and its few auctions end well above 100USD.
