Blocks - how to choose the right size and shape
Dear Modelers,
To ensure your rigging is as accurate as possible, we have prepared tools to assist you with planning. You can download our calculation table for rope diameters and block sizes, or use our modern interactive rigging calculator. By entering the scale and mast dimensions, you will immediately receive the exact block sizes and recommended rope diameters.
Why blocks matter and where to get them
Blocks are essential elements of a high-quality historical ship model. Producing them accurately is demanding, which is why we manufacture precision CNC blocks from walnut wood to give your model an authentic look.

Historical Standards: Evolution of Block Shapes
When building a historically accurate model, it is crucial to choose a block shape corresponding to the correct era:
- Continental blocks – featuring a more rounded shape, these were the standard for all European vessels (including British) from the 16th to the 18th century.
- British blocks – characterized by an angular, profiled shape. This design became prominent in the Royal Navy during the 18th century and spread throughout Europe during the second half of that century.

Our production follows British standards from the turn of the 18th/19th century and continental standards based on ANCRE historical sources.
How to choose the right size and type
Your choice depends on your building approach:
- Custom Accessory Sets: If we offer a ready-to-use accessory set for your ship model, the work is done for you. These sets include all necessary accessories, including specialized rope sets and matching blocks.
- Individual Builds: If building from scratch, use our online rigging calculator (based on W. zu Mondfeld). It precisely calculates the required block sizes and rope diameters for your scale. You can then order the ropes in our modeler’s ropes section.
Rigging Plans
To simplify your build, we offer professional ship plans based on original sources. Recommended blocks are clearly marked with symbols for a perfect result.
