Product detailed description

Description: Excavations conducted in the early 20th century by Norwegian archaeologist Haakon Shetelig and his Swedish colleague Gabriel Gustafson in a burial mound near Oseberg, Norway, have revealed the hull of a 9th-century Viking ship. Vessel

of the "karv" type with a typical clinker lining with mutually offset planks was made mainly of oak; the bow and stern of the ship were adorned with beautiful carved strips. The ship was later picked up and restored - you can visit it at the Viking Ship Museum in Bygdøy near Oslo, Norway. In the same city there is the Kon-Tiki Museum with collections from Thor Heyrdahl's expeditions, the Norwegian Maritime Museum and the Fram Ship Museum famous for the polar expeditions of Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen - it's worth a trip to the north!

The original investigation of the ship and the double sinking of the built replica seemed to show that it was more of a vessel for the ceremonial burial of a prominent Viking "official" - in this case probably Queen Åsa, buried in 834, not a ship capable of sailing on the high seas. However, the use of state-of-the-art non-destructive research methods, such as laser scanning, has revealed in the last decade that hull lifting and subsequent restoration have shortened the hull, bringing the mast into the wrong position and undesirably changing the hull geometry. Based on these findings, a new replica was built and launched on the water in 2012. The voyage tests were a complete success, the ship did very well on the high seas and reached a speed of 10 knots under sail. Oseberg is designed for beginning shipbuilders; is designed as a "waterline" desktop mockup.

Mini Oseberg has a fuselage of simple wooden construction from laser-cut parts with veneer plating and a wooden plank deck. The hull is "cut" on the waterline - similar to "waterline" plastic kits. The kit contains all the wooden parts needed to complete the model, mock-up details, tarpaulin, etc.
