Sail description: This combined 25-sail set represents the configuration at the beginning of the battle between USS Constitution and HMS Java in 1812. The course of the battle is described in detail on the official U.S. Navy website. The set does not include studding sails, which can be ordered separately under code S074s.

The sails are sewn according to contemporary American regulations derived from British naval practice. Construction details are based on Anatomy of the Ship – The 44-Gun Frigate USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”).

Construction details include:
– upper sail hems are generally wider than the side and foot hems, except on the fore course, main course and topsails, where tapering reinforcing side bands are applied;
– fore course, main course and topsails are reinforced with middle bands, with buntline cloths sewn from the lower edge at the attachment points of the buntlines;
– reef bands reinforce the areas where reef points are attached, with the number corresponding to the number of reefs on each sail;
– topgallant sails, the spritsail course, topsails and smaller sails are lined at the corners for additional strength;
– topsails are fitted on the reverse side with mast cloths to prevent chafing against the mast and top platform;
– staysails and jibs are reinforced at the corners on the starboard side when viewed from astern; staysails with a vertical luff are reinforced along the entire leading edge.
