Description - The flag sheet consists of two parts:
The upper part contains:
US flags
Blue Jack with 48 stars - 1912-1959
5 Star Blue or Red Admiral Flags - US NAVY, - according to the 5 Star Admiral present on board
The lower part contains:
flags associated with the signing of the Japanese surrender, which took place on board the battleship USS Missouri on 2 September 1945 in Tokyo Bay. The surrender was signed on board this ship, which served as the site of the official end of World War II in the Pacific. The USS Missouri was chosen because it was considered a symbol of the strength and victory of the United States.
And these are the flags:
* American flag ‘Stars and Stripes’ It was prominently displayed on the ship as a symbol of the victorious power.
*Commodore Perry's Flag – a replica of the historic flag from 1853. This flag had only 31 stars, corresponding to the number of states in the Union in 1853. It was the same flag that Commodore Matthew Perry had when he opened Japan to trade relations in the 19th century.
It was flown behind General Douglas MacArthur during the signing as a symbol of historical continuity and the culmination of American-Japanese relations.
*Japanese flag – known Nisshōki or Hinomaru – It was present as part of the official ceremony, although in a subordinate position – the capitulating party
*The ship also flew the flags of the Allied powers whose representatives were present (e.g. the United Kingdom, the USSR, China, Australia, France, Canada and others). These flags represented the international character of the Allied victory.
