Standard walnut blocks
Standard walnut blocks are among the most commonly used components in the rigging of historic ship models. HiSModel manufactures these blocks using CNC technology from high-quality walnut wood, offering single, double and triple variants. The blocks feature precisely drilled rope holes but do not contain functional rotating sheaves, making them primarily intended for static historical ship models.
Two main shape types are available – British and Continental. British-style blocks are characterized by a more angular, strongly profiled shape that became a distinctive feature of Royal Navy rigging during the 18th century and later spread into merchant shipping. Continental blocks feature a more rounded shape and were widely used across European fleets, including British vessels, from the 16th century until the mid-18th century.
Single blocks were used for general handling with lower loads, while double and triple blocks formed part of tackle systems designed to handle heavier loads, such as gun handling, shroud tensioning, lifting yards, boats or other heavy equipment. Correct block size was always selected according to rope diameter and expected load.
