In 1625, King Gustav Adolf II of Sweden commissioned the VASA as the flagship of his Baltic fleet. Under the direction of a Dutch master shipwright, 400 craftsmen worked in the royal shipyard in Stockholm. The hull, built of oak with two gun decks, was completed in early 1928. With more than 700 lavish carved and gilded sculptures and other decorations, VASA became a vessel of truly impressive splendour. With a length of 69 m and 72 guns, this warship, named after the reigning royal dynasty, was one of the largest of its time. Urgently needed by the king during the war against the Poles, she set sail on 10 August 1628 and set sail on her maiden voyage from Stockholm harbour. However, after being hit by a gust of wind, she took on water through the open gunports and sank in a few short moments before the eyes of the assembled crowd. 328 years later, VASA was rediscovered in Stockholm harbour and raised from the bottom in 1961. Extensive searches for parts of the ship, their reconstruction and conservation are still going on today. Since 1990, this unique and almost complete ship has been on display in its own museum in Stockholm.
