Violin block - this special block consisted of one larger and one smaller pulley on top of each other. The violin block was initially used where a double block was needed to tension the sheets. Or heavily loaded hoists - for example, for hoisting single mast members and large booms, or tensioning top stays. Over time in the 19th century these blocks were replaced by the standard double blocks.
